  3. What is the Bobcat Rank?
  4. Bobcat is earned after Tiger but it is also earned before any of the other ranks. If your son comes into Cub Scouts as a 3rd grader he would need to earn his Bobcat rank before he could earn his Bear rank.

  5. What are the different awards and advancements my son can earn?
  6. When your son comes into scouts they will start working on their rank (Tiger, Bear, etc.) with their Den Leader. There are numerous belt loops and academic pins they can earn as outlined in their Scout Book (the books are sold at the District's Gold Dust Scout Shop in Salida). These may be earned for achievement in sports, science, nature, community service or other categories. There are religious emblems for all faiths (also sold at the Scout Shop) that the boys can work on with their parents. There is also a Boy Scouting of America (BSA) Family Award - again the workbook is sold at the scout shop. Also available are Perfect attendance Award, Summer Participation, and Wildlife Conservation Awards. The point is there are a lot of ways your child can be recognized and they are going to need your help. If your son works on different awards on his own it is his responsibility (with your help of course) to make sure the Den leader gets the information before the next leader's meeting. (Leader's meetings are held on Wednesday night's one week prior to the next scheduled pack meeting).

There are also rank specific advancements and awards:

These are in your son's Cub Scout Book.

Help your son by signing off on the book as he completes his activities.

  7. What are the different events of the pack?
  8. Monthly Pack Meetings- typically held the 3rd Wednesday of each month (Except December and February). Chance to develop Pack unity, receive awards and advancements and Have FUN!

  9. What is the preferred den size?
  10. The den should consist of 5 to 7 boys. This allows for active participation in den events and allows each den leader to manage their meeting process. In some cases, the dens get too large and the pack master must intercede.

  11. Where can I purchase uniforms and supplies?

A typical pack yearly calendar includes events such as:

Fall Camp out - Typically in October- it is a family camping event. Usually includes activities and a cooking contest with a theme.

November -Scouting for Food- The boys meet at Monticello Park and with their adult guides, receive a map of where to go door to door requesting non-perishable food items. All the collected food is donated to Tracy Interfaith Ministry to feed the less fortunate in our community.

Most years a pack event such as bowling or the movies follows later in that same afternoon.

December-Holiday Party- Combined Pack meeting/Pack Event- Family oriented night. The boys typically have practiced a skit or carols at the den level to perform that night. Each boy brings an unwrapped gift for a local charity, dessert to share and some years there is an ornament exchange.

January-Pine Wood Derby- You will receive a car kit at the holiday party from the pack. The boys and their adult partners have 3-4 weeks to build and design a car that will race down a wooden ramp speedway. It really is just a block of wood and some wheels, so start early and talk to some of the more seasoned racers for tips. This is a fun all day event. In past years there has been a snack bar and a really great raffle going on during the races.

February-Blue and Gold - Is a celebration of Scouting' Birthday. Typically the boys develop centerpieces and decorations at a den meeting. In years past we have a family potluck and the boys make a cake with the family member who does the least cooking in the house. The theme is given at the January Pack meeting. The winning cakes are sold at auction (Bring your checkbooks this is a FUN-Draiser). The remainder of the participant's cakes will be served for dessert, unless the boy wants to take it home.

March - Generally a field trip is scheduled for the pack event-Past field trips have been overnighters on the USS Hornet, or Pampanito, Train Museum. Getting money in early to these events is helpful in scheduling and allowing us to open it up to other packs if we don't have enough scouts within the pack to support the event.

April - Cubmobile/Field Day - Cubmobiles are the bigger push cart type cars that the boys take turns racing with an adult pushing. The Pack has several of these cars in storage but making a new one is always welcomed. The field days also include opportunities for boys to earn several belt loops.

May - Field Trip as a pack.

Summertime - We don't have a pack meeting until September. But there is a Day Camp sponsored by the Council and opportunities to " Go to Overnight Camp" also sponsored by the Council. This information is given out during the spring pack meetings and is done on an individual basis.

OK the really important part of this:

We need your help to make the Pack GO! None of these activities happen by themselves. Each event requires adult assistance! The Pack Committee always needs more members. Each of these events can occur and succeed with your involvement!

Failure to gather support from the adults will cause some of these events not to occur as planned!
